Crates are boxes of improvable crops or other items, created at the crate factory in the workyard. They are available to be built after you solve the trade license quest.
To sell them, they have to be transported to the trade office in the village. There, they need to be put on pallets, which causes the crates to be sold automatically by the merchant every 
.
You can haul your crates manually to the village or build a crate factory and assign a 
zombie to the related porter station in the barn cellar to have it done for you.
