Valuable items

The Merchant arrives fittingly every week on Gluttony and enjoys decadent food. He will purchase from you almost any Gold Quality dish. His real name is Lawrence. He is the brother of the Bishop.

Quests[]

Buy or Farm[]

After talking to Horadric about a vegetable garden south of the keeper's house he will tell you that it is abandoned and that he sold it to the merchant. He asks you to speak to the merchant first, but you are able to do it anyway after using the
Garden certificate
.

After meeting the merchant he tells you that you can use the land if you are able to successfully grow vegetables.

First he demands, Gold Coin10 .

If you refuse once, Gold Coin5 .

If you refuse twice, you will be able to ask him for a barter. If you don't accept it though you'll have to buy the garden for Gold Coin10 and make it nice again. After an apology, he'll trade with you again, and lower the price to a final Gold Coin1 . You'll still be able to work the garden without paying the money, but you need to pay to advance the questline. Paying him any amount of money skips the first harvest quest.

If you accept the barter, he gives you a quest to bring him your first harvest of 12×
Carrot
, 12×
Cabbage
, and 12×
Beet
to get a
Story
.

Repay Loan[]

When you repay the Silver Coin10 loan, you gain 10 Happiness and
Story
.

Hiccup Cure[]

The merchant is suffering from hiccups. After trying to scare the hiccups out of him, he gives you a quest to find
Hiccup grass
growing in the swamp, west of the church across the stone bridge which you have to repair. Return to the merchant for 10 Happiness and a
Story
.

No Taste[]

After you bring him some
Hiccup grass
it cures his hiccups but also leaves him unable to taste anything due to a curse. He requests that you speak to Clotho about a cure.

After some back-and-forth about professional courtesy to the other witch who cursed him, Clotho relents and tells you the recipe for her cure:
Salt
and
health solution
. These two ingredients used together will create
spices
. It is possible to create spices without talking to her first.

Bring the spices to the merchant for another 10 Happiness. You can not give him the spices without first talking to Clotho.

Trade license[]

Next you need a
trade license
, which can be bought from the royal services next to the church. To be able to buy it, you need to buy the "Righful Citizen" status for Silver Coin3 in advance. The
trade license
costs Silver Coin50 .

Once you bring your license to the merchant, he will open up the trade office and ask you to bring a crate of goods each Gluttony for him to sell. These
crate
s are made in the crate factory (in older versions, the packing table).

Royal Dinner[]

Next task is making 5x Gold Quality
Dinner
for him to present them before the king.

After 60[]

You need to complete the two tasks related to the trade office (getting enough fame and selling 7 crates), that should give you at least 70 Happiness to unlock the next step. You ask him how the royal dinner was, and he said it was great, and that even though now they got some support from the royal council as a whole, the head of the council needs some more convincing. More specifically, Ms. Charm's convincing.

Promoting your business[]

You want to try and use Ms. Charm to make your veggie-selling business grow. You need at least 40 Happiness with her for that, and you need to make her a piece of jewelry. After doing this, besides getting
fame
for the trade office, she will start selling
jewelry
and
perfume
.

Big Ceremony[]

The merchant tells you that all went well, but he wants to attend a big ceremony as keeper of the king's kitchen and needs your help for that. After the Inquisitor turned you down, you can ask the merchant to join your feast in the cathedral. He agrees and hands you an
Accepted invitation
to show to the bishop.

Salty Fork[]

Ask him for the
Salty fork
. He'll only give it to you if you reached 100 Happiness with him.

Loan[]

If you ask him about seeds he'll offer you a loan of Silver Coin5 with 100% interest. If you decline it first, you can always get it via talking about your deal and then about the loan. It is not timed but you have to pay back Silver Coin10 .

Trades[]

Note: as of v1.3, the merchant no longer sells or buys faceted diamonds. He may still have them in his inventory within game-instances that began prior to v1.3 - this is likely an oversight. As of v1.4, the merchant should sell and buy diamonds again, though there have been reports that this is not entirely consistent.
