The Keeper has only 20 slots for any items and 7 slots for specific equipment (armor, weapon, tools) in his inventory. Given the large number of tools, resources and equipment you'll pickup you'll need to store items to make use of it all. Trunks are the most basic form of this and items stored within will be accessible to all workstations in the same area. The same is true of the chest in your home. There are other forms of storage as well which are decorative in nature.
